The meteoric rise of social media platforms has brought with it an unwelcome guest – deepfake material – the implications of which are far-reaching, and can be devastating for both individuals and companies alike.
In episode 203 of The Data Diva Talks Privacy Podcast, Debbie Reynolds chats to Darren Spence, CRO at Smartbox.ai, about the dangers people and companies face on a daily basis when they fail to have the proper data protection protocols in place, and why the rise of deepfake media is so alarming.
According to stats, around 500,000 video and voice deepfakes were shared on social media last year, but by next year, that figure is set to mushroom to eight million. Ofcom figures reveal a significant 43% of people aged 16 and above have seen at least one deepfake online in the last six months, and 50% of children aged eight to 15 have seen one.
The business world is not immune either. According to research, more than 10% of companies have dealt with attempted or successful deepfake fraud, and worryingly 80% of companies are lacking the protocols to handle deepfake attacks. Just 5% said they have comprehensive deepfake attack prevention measures in place.
During the Podcast conversation, Spence provides an overview of Smartbox.ai’s applied AI solution, which detects and redacts personal and sensitive data within unstructured data sets such as email systems and chat conversations. Also discussed is the long-standing challenge of managing sensitive data in the digital age, exposing the manual redaction processes’ inefficiency and laborious nature.
The conversation also touches on the impact of privacy regulations on companies, emphasising the need for transparency and the challenges of fulfilling data subject access requests (DSARs).
Spence expands on the global reach of privacy regulations and the need for companies to handle tough regulations worldwide. The Podcast conversation in full is below.
